ESSAY QUESTIONS

Please answer each of the following questions with a short essay of up to 250 words. You may want to type your essays in another document and cut and paste into the spaces below.


1) What draws you to the Steiner Summer Program for College Students? Does Yiddish have a specific attraction? What is the significance of Yiddish or Yiddish culture for you?

2) Describe your idea for a project in Yiddish culture, or elaborate on your interest or experience in translating Yiddish to English. If you have already begun a research or translation project, please include information on how far along you are.

3) What was the best job you ever had? What were your specific responsibilities? Did you look forward to going to work in the morning? What did you appreciate about your boss and the way he or she treated you? If you were to become the boss yourself, what would you change to make the work experience even better?

4) What's the best college course you've ever taken? Briefly describe the course. What was there about the subject matter that particularly intrigued you? What was there about the teacher that you especially appreciated? How has the course made a difference in your life?

5) When in a group setting, what role do you like to play or feel most comfortable in?

 


 

SUPPORTING MATERIALS

In addition to this application, please mail us the following:
A. Two academic letters of recommendation. References from other than a college or university faculty member will be considered by special request.

B. Transcript(s) of all college courses and grades, both college and graduate school, if applicable (photocopies will be accepted).

The deadline for submitting the online portions of the application is February 1. All supporting materials should be submitted by mail (except by special arrangement), and must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2008, and must be received by us by February 8, 2008.
